Dacre

It is believed that Dacre Castle (now just a pele tower) was the meeting place of ‘kings’ from all over Britain in about AD 927. Among the royalty who attended were Athelstan, the Saxon King of England, Constantine, King of Scots and Owen Caesarius of Cumberland. The intention was to make a lasting peace between England and Scotland. Unfortunately, by about 937, Constantine was conspiring with Vikings against Athelstan. There followed the Battle of Brunnanburh - said to be the bloodiest battle of the times. Certainly the death toll of English kings, earls and bishops was horrendous, but the Scots/Viking combination was defeated.

However the main three original participants in the peace talks at Dacre were clearly dissatisfied with the result, so they kept coming back to Dacre to try and sort things out.

A pair of star-crossed lovers also haunt the castle. They are said to be a French lass, Eloise and an Italian tutor to Sir Guy.

Sir Guy adored Eloise and, when he was called away from the castle, he entrusted his Italian tutor to win the lady on his behalf. The Italian did so well that Eloise fell for him. Despite this, she accepted Sir Guy’s proposal when he returned.

Once again, Sir Guy had to leave on business. This time he left his trusted friend, Lyulph, to keep an eye on things. But affair between Eloise and the tutor resumed. When Lyulph found out, the pair decamped for York.

Sir Guy was sent for and he went after the lovers. Eloise was captured and brought back to Dacre and put into a deep, dark dungeon. There she found her dead lover chained to the wall. It is even claimed that Eloise only learned that her lover was dead when she went to kiss him and his head fell off. The pair were kept there until Eloise, too, was dead. The ghosts of Eloise and her lover still roam the castle, with Eloise frequently heard moaning, sobbing and screaming.
